Actually, the top Mage DPS in ICC Heroics is...you guessed it, a Fire Mage. Fire Mages are not a thing of the past. You can actually boost your sustainable DPS switching to Fire and knowing a CORRECT way to prioritize your spells.

hit cap is 17%. if your arcane you get 6% from talents. so you will only need to come up with 11%. add a boomkin or a shadow priest in there and thats another 3% hit so now need 8% hit. with this gear, hit talents, and the boomkin/shadow priest hit buff. you will be 39 points over hit raiting for arcane spells.

now if your fire then yes, it will leave you far from hit cap. but fire mages are a thing in the past now.

would you wana have to cast 10 spells to get the full effect of a trinket (and it will only be 30 or so SP higher then ROTD (reign) ) or would you rather have a consit 125ish sp bonus with 1-2k instant dmg about every 3 spell casts? if you ask me i would rather not have to cast 10 spells to gain the full affect of the trinket. and that is why reign>spyglass

As of patch 3.0+

OK so I will explain how haste works. 100% (3300) haste will remove a total of 1 second from any spell. So Arcane Blast has a 2.5 second cast time. If you have 100% haste then Arcane Blasts new cast time will be 1.5 second. So the maximum haste you want as an arcane mage is 150% (4950) because 150% haste will remove 1.5 seconds off of Arcane Blast which will make the cast time exactly 1 second. The Global Cool Down (GCD) in WoW is 1.5 seconds and with at least 50% (1650) the GCD is lowered to 1 second. 1 second is the shortest that the GCD will go. So you can never cast any spell faster than 1 second.

An Arcane Mage can get 150% (4950) haste by having these buffs all at the same time.

30% Heroism/Bloodlust
20% Icy Veins
12% 2xT10 set bonus on proc
6% Netherwind Presence (Arcane Talent Points)
35% Haste rating from gear (1147)

Equals 150% haste

Now if you do the math and add all of these percentages up you might say "Hey, this only equals 103% haste." Well thats the tricky part. Blizzard does not simply add these percentages together. Blizzard has an algebraic formula that adds the haste bonus percentages in a certain way. If you are interested in the mathematical formula, please refer to these links below.

Also there is a great website that calculates all of this for you and bypasses all of the mathematical mumbo jumbo and is really easy to use. PLEASE CHECK OUT THIS SITE!

Well I hope this helps you guys when determining how much haste you actually need. Also if you dont have 1147 haste rating from your gear, you can always use a Potion of Speed which increases your haste rating by 500 for 15 seconds. So therefore you would only need 647 haste rating from your gear.

And to top it all off, there are many other things that will increase your haste rating either from raid buffs or some other way. So if you see that your haste rating is going above 150%, then that means you are waisting excess haste. At that point I would just not use Icy Veins durning Heroism/Bloodlust.
